Carlos Bunga creates process-oriented works in various formats — sculptures, paintings, drawings, performances, video, and above all in situ installations that refer to and intervene in their immediate architectural surroundings.
While often using ordinary, unassuming materials such as packing cardboard and adhesive tape, Bunga’s work involves a highly developed aesthetic sense and sensibility characterized by an intense study of color and materiality. Straddling the divide between sculpture and painting, Bunga’s works are deceptively delicate and yet fully commanding in their spatial and perceptual presence.
Beyond its materiality, Bunga’s work involves a conceptual complexity derived from the inter-relationships between doing and undoing, remaking and unmaking, the micro and the macro, investigation and conclusion, imagination and memory., while at the same time they emphasize the performative — and thereby temporal — aspect of the creative act and the resultant art object.
