The Galería Elba Benítez is pleased to announce the coming exhibition of work by Ignasi Aballí, opening on Friday, February 28th 2020, from 10 am.
Entitled Palabras vacías (Empty Words), the show will consist of two separate installations extending across the walls of the entire gallery. The installation Palabras vacías is composed of a continuous line of metal stencils, all displaying words that refer in some way to a state of emptiness, thus setting up ‘play on words’ between the empty spaces within the stencils and the semantic content of the words those negative spaces communicate. The second installation, Línea roja, is composed of newspaper clippings in which the color red has been printed; the clippings, in varying shades of red and in a range of different shapes and sizes, are arranged in a continuous sequence, forming an unbroken but not uniform red line along the gallery’s wall.
Taken together, two new installations offer a potent distillation of some of the core concerns which drive Aballí highly acclaimed work, such as the elusive and oscillating relationship between presence and absence, the poetical ambivalence inherent in verbal language, and the search for forms of painting that do not have recourse to the use of paint itself.
