As Time Swallows Time is El Ultimo Grito’s first feature-length film, commissioned for the BIO28 Ljubljana Biennale, and directed by Rosario Hurtado, Roberto Feo and Stuart Bannocks. Known for their work at the intersection of design, architecture, and media, this project extends their ongoing exploration into the boundaries of cinematic language through what they call filmoids—hybrid multimedia and spatial works that operate as films without adhering to conventional film form.
This work emerges from a dialogue with the Biennale’s curatorial theme, “Do You Speak Flower?” curated by Alexandra Midal. The theme investigates historical contexts in which women have been symbolically linked to flowers —figures of fragility, sensuality, and objectification— and how those associations have been reclaimed and subverted. Rather than interpreting this theme directly, they place it in conversation with another storyline: a speculative exploration of time and temporal perception, drawn from their ongoing metauniverse developed in previous works such as Earth: A Retrospective (Valencia, 2022–23) and Visitants (Madrid, 2024).
The result is a film constructed through the juxtaposition of narrative fragments, scenes layered in a way that invites viewers to assemble meaning through their own movement across the film. Much like a spatial installation, As Time Swallows Time resists linear progression, instead producing a kind of narrative Kuleshov Effect, where associations emerge in the gaps between stories rather than within them.
They produced this filmoid as an experiment in the expanding language of cinema— where narrative, installation, and speculative fiction collide.
Synopsis
BE awakens in a world she does not fully recognize—only to discover she is retracing a path laid out by her future self. Along this mysterious journey, she follows cryptic clues and remnants of choices not yet made, drawing her ever closer to a moment of convergence: the instant she and her future self will merge in the present.
With that merging comes transformation—and the unlocking of strange and powerful gifts collected along the way.
But BE’s evolution may not be as accidental as it seems. Shadowy forces are watching, some determined to stop her, others desperate to control what she is becoming. For BE is destined to transform into POPPY: the embodiment of death and rebirth. A figure both feared and revered. A turning point in the balance between creation and destruction.
As timelines collapse and identities blur, BE must decide whether to embrace her fate—or redefine it entirely.
