Galería Elba Benítez is pleased to present a new season of /08/, an annual series of exhibitions organised by Alejandro Cesarco that take place while the gallery is closed for its summer break.
This August, /08/ presents “Provocar una condensación pasajera sobre la pared de cristal del auditorio durante el transcurso de una conferencia de Ignasi Aballí” (To Cause a Temporary Condensation on the Glass Wall of the Auditorium During a Lecture by Ignasi Aballí) (2008), a video by Luz Broto documenting an intervention carried out during a public event held in conjunction with a group exhibition at Sala d’Art Jove, Barcelona. Aballí had been invited to speak about his most ephemeral works; Broto’s intervention, however, was not announced to either the audience or the speaker.
As in much of Broto’s practice, the work does not consist in the production of an object but in the precise modification of existing conditions. An almost imperceptible change temporarily alters the habitual functioning of a space, shifting attention toward what normally remains invisible.
The presentation of this work within /08/ establishes a series of correspondences with the format of the series itself. Taking place while the gallery is closed to the public for the summer, /08/ occupies a suspended time and space, operating alongside the gallery’s regular exhibition program in much the same way that Broto’s intervention unfolded alongside Aballí’s lecture. The selection of this work also underscores the gallery’s long-standing relationship with Aballí, whose presence resonates in the video indirectly—not as the protagonist of the work, but as the framework within which it quietly unfolds.

Luz Broto’s practice engages with its immediate framework. She develops projects tailored to specific contexts, presented in formats such as interventions, actions, gatherings, protocols, or tours. She has collaborated with institutions such as Manifesta 14 (Prishtina), Secession (Vienna), MACBA (Barcelona), Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao), Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea (Donosti), CA2M (Madrid), and Centre d’Art la Panera (Lleida). She has received research and production grants from the Royal Institute of Art (Stockholm), the Blueproject Foundation (Barcelona), and the Botín Foundation’s Visual Arts Grants (Santander), and has participated in residencies such as Arte por Venir (Madrid), FLORA (Bogotá), and Hangar (Barcelona). Her work is included in public collections such as MUSAC, MACBA, MAMBO, and the National Collection of Contemporary Art.
