The Galería Elba Benítez is pleased to announce that it will launch the coming season with an exhibition of new work by Vik Muniz, opening September 12th.
Entitled Photocubism, the exhibition consists of photographic works that showcase the Brazilian artist’s characteristic ability to create images that are visually appealing but at the same time address complex issues of perception and phenomenology, engaging the viewer’s eye and intellect simultaneously. The works included in Photocubism all take as their starting point iconic Cubist paintings by pioneering 20th-century artists such as Picasso, Braque and Gris. Muniz subjects these well-known images to a sequence of physical and photographic manipulations, ultimately arriving at his own strikingly unique images in which format, content and structure seem to oscillate, intriguingly, between complexly textured object and planar photographic reproduction. Thus, the work on view in Photocubism participates in Muniz’s long-standing dialogue with the history of art and photography, while it also forms a coherent extension of his overarching philosophical investigation into the structural nature of representation and of what might be considered the “linguistics” of image-making.
Photocubism is Muniz’s sixth solo show at the Galería Elba Benítez. The September 12th inauguration formed part of the Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend, organized by Arte_Madrid.
