The Elba Benítez Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of new works by Miroslaw Balka, which will open on Saturday, February 21.
Under the title THE FORGETTINGS , the exhibition will consist of a selection of works (primarily sculptures and drawings) that, in formally different but indelibly poetic ways, address the theme of memory and forgetting on personal, social, and archetypal levels. As is characteristic of Balka’s practice, the works on display develop from existing objects and historical references, drawing from them the layers of meaning they have often accumulated—or, just as frequently, lost—through use and disuse over time. The exhibition will include a sculptural installation in which members of the public—witnesses, in Balka’s preferred terminology, rather than spectators—will participate by contributing doormats from their own homes to create a collective work situated, like memory and forgetting, on the threshold between arrival and departure.
