Jack Pierson, Lifeguard, 1997 | Video, color, sound, 6 hours

The Galería Elba Benítez is pleased to announce a new season of /08/, an annual cycle of exhibitions organized by Alejandro Cesarco that occur when the gallery is closed for summer break.

This August, /08/ presents three refreshing videos by iconic American artist Jack Pierson, recorded in Hollywood, Florida, in 1997. Like the rest of his work, these three videos are driven by desire and that desire—mediated, just out of reach — is inextricably linked to different modalities of beauty.

Jack Pierson (Plymouth, USA, 1960) lives and works in New York. Since the early 1990s, he has developed a particular and hugely influential aesthetic through photography, sculpture, drawing, painting and occasionally video. His work explores the emotional undercurrents of everyday life, from the intimacy of romantic attachment to distant idolatry towards certain celebrities and eras. His images are often animated by an aura of seduction, nostalgia and glamour.

Pierson’s work can be found in important public collections such as The Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago); Capc Musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux; ICA Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston); LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles); The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); MFAH Museum of Fine Arts Houston; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York); Walker Art Center (Minneapolis); Yale University Art Gallery (New Haven) and Whitney Museum of American Art (New York).
